Mafia Wars Tips and Tricks (Part 1)

This post is in regard to Mafia Wars on Facebook. Mafia Wars is an application game produced by Zynga. Although it is playable through myspace, myYahoo, and the Iphone, this will primarily focus on the Facebook version. This will probably be the same as other versions, but may have subtle differences.

The basics:
What is Energy?
Energy is the basis of the game. Energy will allow you to do jobs in order to earn money, experience, and loot rewards, some of which you can only get from doing jobs. Some of these loot rewards are required to do other jobs later in the game. You gain 1 energy every 5 minutes, unless you chose to be a “Maniac” in which case it is ever 3 minutes.

What is Stamina?
Stamina is used when you perform actions against another player. For instance, Stamina is used when you fight, rob, sucker punch, or add another player to the hitlist. Stamina regens 1 point every 5 minutes.

What is money used for?
Money is used to buy weapons, armor, and vehicles in order to increase your effectiveness at attacking and defending. Money is also used to buy properties. Properties provide money every 60 minutes (54 minutes if you are a “Mogul”) which helps offset the upkeep costs of owning certain weapons, armors, and vehicles, as well as providing more money to purchase more properties.

What is Experience and how does it work?
Experience is earned by completing jobs or winning battles with other players. Earning experience allows you to gain levels and progress through the game. It also unlocks more jobs and items for you to purchase.

What are Godfather points?
Godfather points are one of the main ways Zynga supports their games, and is able to offer them for free. By participating in online offers Zynga is compensated for referring you to the offer. Essentially by you completing offers, they are being paid. Some offers are free, and should not be ignored as they are a valid tactic to increase your effectiveness at various aspects of the game.

How do fights work?
When you choose to fight someone, the game picks the best weapons, armor, and vehicles you have available for use in the fight. Each member of your mafia is able to use one weapon, one piece of armor, and one vehicle. The attack and defense numbers are calculated along with your own attack and defense ratings, and compared to that of the person you are attacking. The person that comes out taking the least damage is determined to be the winner. There are, however, a few exceptions to this and there is a certain degree of randomness to the outcome, as winning a fight against someone once, does not guarantee a victory in all future battles. Some variables, such as critical hits, can allow the lesser of the two fighters to become the victor.

Why is the size of my mafia important?
When you go into battle, each member of your mafia is able to attack with one weapon, one armor, and one vehicle. Because of this, having only 50 mafia members puts you at a disadvantage against someone with 100 mafia members. However, if you do not have enough items to arm each member of your mafia they are useless.

What does the energy pack do?
The energy pack will refill your energy and grant you an additional 25% on top of your maximum temporarily. This means you should try to use your energy packs when your energy is completely empty (at zero). Because you also receive a free energy refill when you level up, if you are close to leveling, you should delay the use of your energy pack until after you level.

Stay tuned for further posts where I will introduce more advanced tips and tricks.
